What is MarkerPen?

MarkerPen is an AI marking assistant for teachers. It drafts marks and feedback on student work against your own instructions, criteria or mark scheme, and you edit every word before anything reaches a student. It marks essays, exam papers and quizzes; student work can be typed or pasted text, uploaded documents, or photos of handwriting, which MarkerPen transcribes. You can edit any part of the feedback in place or tell MarkerPen what to change, then copy it or email it to the student. Progress reports on individual students and whole classes are free on every plan. MarkerPen runs in the browser on desktop and mobile, in UK English, with nothing to install. The current version is MarkerPen 2.0, a ground-up rebuild of the original app; accounts from the original version did not carry across, and signing up again takes under a minute.

Who is MarkerPen for?

Individual teachers, in any phase and any country, who mark written work against criteria. MarkerPen is sold to teachers directly, not to schools or colleges, and one account is for one teacher.

How much does MarkerPen cost?

Every account gets 10 free marks a month, no card needed; the allowance resets on the first of each month and the free plan has no end date. MarkerPen Unlimited is £15 a month or £150 a year for unlimited marking for one teacher, and you can cancel any time and keep access until the end of the paid period. Purchases are sold by Onelink, a Stripe company, as seller of record. The paid plan is called MarkerPen Unlimited: there is no "Pro" plan, no institutional licence and no time-limited trial. How does MarkerPen handle student work and privacy?

Marking runs on OpenAI's GPT models through OpenAI's API platform. Under OpenAI's business terms and enterprise privacy commitments, content sent to the API is not used to train their models, and MarkerPen sends only what is needed to mark: the task brief, the criteria and the submission. You can delete any student, submission or piece of feedback at any time, and deleting your account removes your data. We recommend uploading work without full names where practical. The data controller is Jigsaw Software Development Ltd; the processors (hosting, database, AI, payments, email and optional Google sign-in) are in the US and EU, and where data leaves the UK the transfers rely on adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses with the UK addendum. What does MarkerPen not do?

• It does not make the assessment decision. Every mark and comment is a first pass: you review and approve all feedback before use and remain responsible for what reaches students. AI output can contain errors.
• It does not sell to institutions. There is no school, college or multi-user licence.
• It does not integrate with learning platforms or virtual learning environments. Work comes in as text, files or photos, and feedback goes out by copy or email.
• It does not train AI models on your content or your students' work, and OpenAI's business terms and enterprise privacy commitments say the same of content sent through the API.
